Chicago Cook County Health’s Community Relations team hosted a pizza dinner at our youth drop-in center, raising awareness on issues that impact our neighbors and local communities.
Sophia E. Choi, PA-C, specializing with Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine arrived with enough pizza and soft drinks to keep our crowd of street youth involved, at the same time participated with the evening education program.
Sophia led the discussion of Sexually Transmitted Disease, especially the HIV virus. Running a Power Point presentation, Sophia handed out index cards to the youth with scenarios and multiple choice solutions, starting group discussions verifying they’re listening and learning.
The youth heard about early symptoms of HIV, how left untreated, can develop into AIDS, which is the final stage of HIV where the immune system is defenseless against illnesses of infections.
While there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, early detection and treatment make it easier to manage the virus and continue life.
