StandUp for Kids – Orange County
At StandUp for Kids, our primary purpose is to serve the homeless and at-risk youth population by addressing many different aspects of their lives. At our outreach centers, we focus on teaching and mentoring youth on various meaningful life and academic skills to help them succeed in life and at school.
This month, we want to highlight the exceptional efforts of Jason Chon, who has contributed tremendously to accomplishing these goals. Jason is a rising Senior at Canyon High school. He has been volunteering for the past three years, starting during his freshman year.
For starting an online Summer Study Skills Camp, Jason says, “I just wanted to use my talents to help kids who have fewer resources than me. Originally, I had helped in person by tutoring at the Anaheim Outreach Center. Still, during the COVID shutdown, I saw an opportunity to continue teaching important skills even during the pandemic shutdown. I know firsthand the power of technology in teaching and learning, so I created a virtual tutoring curriculum in 2020 to continue teaching important school and life skills.”
Jason’s virtual tutoring curriculum is a unique service that is the first of its kind in the nation for StandUp for Kids. In the three consecutive summers he has run the skills camp, he has impacted many junior high and high school students. Each summer, Jason has arranged for the donation of study skill books, Chromebook computers, and cell phone mobile hotspots for internet access to ensure that more students can participate in the program and have access to technology that has become increasingly important.
“I feel grateful for this opportunity that has let me use my talents to help this excellent organization and staff provide support to homeless and at-risk youths. It is such a rewarding experience to be of service to these wonderful students. I hope others will consider volunteering or supporting StandUp for Kids.”
